Inner Western

Dan Lethbridge
Inner Western

Released Tuesday April 10th 2012

The release of his 2008 album Dreamers of the World Unite established Dan Lethbridge as one of Melbourne's most likeable and idiosyncratic songwriters. Lauded as 'an excellent alt. country album by a fine local talent, and a remarkably assured debut’ (Inpress), the record sealed Dan’s seduction of Melbourne’s live music scene, taking him on tour across Australia before winding up at New York's famed Rockwood Music Hall.

Having taken a short hiatus to indulge his greatest love – playing guitar for a smattering of Melbourne musical luminaries – Dan is now back to claim centre-stage with his highly-anticipated second album, Oh Hawke (released 10th April).

Named after the street on which it was recorded, Oh Hawke captures a rawer Lethbridge; a disarmingly intimate collection of solidly written songs recorded on a 16-track and mixed by ARIA award winner Shane O’Mara (Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, The Audreys).

Oh Hawke is a brutally candid record. It fronts up to the monotony of modern life, picks at the carcass of long-term love and unleashes Lethbridge’s bewilderment at his own dissatisfaction.

The album showcases Lethbridge’s musical diversity, ranging from the anthemic saxophone riff of the opener, Saturday Night Fever, through the edgier rock of Wish For What You Had to the country lament Hard To Fight (featuring the inimitable Tracy McNeil).

Throughout it all, Lethbridge melds meticulous songcraft and distinctive vocals against a cornerstone of timeless guitar work: Having shaken the heart out of you, Oh Hawke ultimately provides deliverance.

'Delivering in both style and substance, Oh Hawke is a nutritious treat for the ears. Lethbridge can make the point or share the sentiment with just a few lines - a rare and admirable trait in a songwriter'
- Martin Jones, Rhythms Magazine

'Oh Hawke, Melbourne singer-songwriter Dan Lethbridge’s second album, is a sparse, sophisticated collection of folk and folk-country ruminations on life and love. Oh Hawke is a record that deserves, and benefits from, repeated listening as there is a lot to enjoy here. This album comes recommended.'
- The AU Review

'With his mannered songs of heartache and self-examination, Lethbridge bridges the gap between alt.country, folk and the clear-eyed indie pop of yesteryear's Candle Records roster. Oh Hawke is full of quietly gripping moments, this may sound commonplace but it's the songs that stay with you.'
- Doug Wallen (Rolling Stone/The Big Issue)

'In all, Oh Hawke is a triumphant exhibition of all we have come to expect from Dan Lethbridge - it's skillful exploration of a staggering range of classic sounds is combined with a strong, grounded voice and unified by an overarching mood of reflective melancholy that is truly empathetic. The result is an album that is, simply put, damn fine company.'
 - Unpaved.com.au

'Dan melds meticulous song craft & distinctive vocals against a cornerstone of timeless guitar work. This album is one of those terrific 'slow burn' albums that creep up on you & then won't let you go...you know, the ones that truly reward repeated listening and then end up being one of your absolute faves.'
- Basement Discs Melbourne

'Oh Hawke is a gentle gem. These songs are sturdy and reliable, not throwaway. This is an album that gently gets under your skin...these songs should be all over the radio'.
- Jeff Jenkins, Inpress Magazine
